Millungera station is about a 100 kilometres north of Julia Creek in north-west Queensland. At One Million Acres it is the breeding base for the Acton Land & Cattle Co. The station provides a relatively disease-free environment including expansive downs country, which is serviced by 40 artesion bores feeding a network of 600 kilometres of drains - including the longest in the world at 175 km.
Their home brand "Acton Super Beef" and slogan 'From the paddock to the plate' are synonomous with prime beef. Droughtmaster cattle (a bos indicus & bos taurus hybrid) bred with characteristics renowned for drought tolerance, resistance to ticks, heat and eye cancer - are the predominant stock selectively interbred with Santa Gertrudis, Charolais and Angus bloodlines to produce a high yielding herd.
Evan R Acton is the 'hands-on' supremo on Millungera, ably supported in operations by his wife Kim, who both share a passion for campdrafting. Evan's son Philip is the head stockman and they manage a crew of over 25 consisting of machinery operators - maintaining the roads and bore drain network- jack and jillaroos - mustering 85,000 head of cattle annually - and truck drivers, stable hands, maintenance contractors as well as the usual gardener, cook and administrative positions.
The mustering season lasts from March to November and many young folk with an interest in 'outback station life' including internationals, take up employment as stockworkers being part of their 'gap year' experience. However, there are often vacancies for reliable machine operators and mature age workers too. Contact Millungera via the Acton Land & Cattle Co advertisement in Outback magazine.
